Beetles

Carpet beetles, powderpost beetles, and lady beetles are common insect pests found in BC homes and buildings. Carpet beetles and powderpost beetles can both cause damage indoors, with larvae feeding on natural fibres such as carpets, clothing, upholstery, and stored materials, or boring into wood and leaving behind small holes and fine dust. Lady beetles, while generally harmless outdoors, often become a nuisance when they gather in large numbers inside homes, especially during cooler months when they seek warmth and shelter.

These beetles are often attracted by food sources, organic materials, or entry points around windows, doors, and building cracks. Once established indoors, they can be persistent and difficult to manage without proper identification and control measures.

Carpet Beetle

Size: 2 – 5 mm (adult carpet beetles are very small)

Color: Black, brown, mottled white, yellow, or orange patterns depending on species (often speckled or patterned)

Unique Characteristics:
Carpet beetles are small, oval-shaped insects known for infesting fabrics, carpets, clothing, upholstery, and stored natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, and feathers. The damaging stage is actually the larvae, which are covered in bristly hairs and feed on organic materials in dark, undisturbed areas like closets, baseboards, and under furniture. Adults are often found near windows as they are attracted to light and feed mainly on pollen outdoors. Infestations are usually noticed by irregular holes in fabrics or shed larval skins.

Control:
Thorough vacuuming of carpets, rugs, baseboards, and furniture edges is essential to remove eggs and larvae. Wash or dry-clean infested clothing and fabrics at high temperatures. Store seasonal clothing in sealed containers. Reduce access to food sources such as lint, pet hair, and natural fibers. Seal cracks and entry points where adults may enter. In persistent infestations, targeted insecticide treatments or professional pest control may be necessary.

Powderpost Beetle

Size: 2 – 7 mm (adult beetles are very small; larvae can be longer inside wood)

Color: Reddish-brown – Dark brown (some species may appear nearly black)

Unique Characteristics:
Powderpost beetles are wood-boring insects that infest hardwoods such as oak, ash, walnut, and bamboo. The damage is caused by the larvae, which tunnel through wood and feed on the starch content, reducing it to a fine, flour-like powder. Infestations are often identified by tiny round exit holes (about the size of a pinhead) and powdery frass that spills from affected wood. These beetles commonly attack flooring, furniture, framing, and decorative wood, and infestations can develop slowly and go unnoticed for long periods.

Control:
Identify and remove heavily infested wood when possible. Reduce moisture levels in wood, as powderpost beetles prefer damp conditions. Use wood sealants, varnishes, or finishes to protect exposed surfaces. Store or install properly kiln-dried lumber to prevent future infestations. For active infestations, professional treatment such as borate wood treatments or fumigation may be required.

Lady Beetle

Size: 1 – 10 mm (varies by species; adults are small, dome-shaped beetles)

Color: Bright red, orange, or yellow with black spots (some species may be solid black or patterned)

Unique Characteristics:
Lady beetles (commonly known as ladybugs) are small, rounded beetles belonging to the family Coccinellidae. They are generally considered beneficial insects because both adults and larvae feed on aphids, scale insects, and other plant pests. While harmless to humans, they can become a nuisance when large groups gather indoors during cooler months to overwinter, often clustering around windows, walls, and attics. When disturbed, they may release a yellowish defensive fluid that can stain surfaces and has a strong odor.

Control:
Seal cracks and entry points around windows, doors, siding, and rooflines to prevent indoor entry. Use screens on vents and windows. Vacuum individual beetles indoors rather than crushing them to avoid staining and odor release. Reduce outdoor attractants by controlling aphid populations on nearby plants. In heavy infestations, exterior perimeter treatments or professional pest control services may help prevent seasonal clustering.

June Beetle

Size: 12 – 25 mm (adults are relatively large, oval-shaped beetles)

Color: Reddish-brown to dark brown; hard, smooth wing covers (elytra)

Unique Characteristics:
June bugs (also known as June beetles or May/June beetles) are nocturnal scarab beetles commonly found in Surrey and across British Columbia. Adults are active in late spring and early summer and are strongly attracted to lights, often flying erratically and colliding with surfaces. While the adult beetles are mostly a nuisance and do not bite or sting, their larval stage (white grubs) lives underground and feeds on grass roots. This can lead to lawn damage such as brown patches, thinning turf, and sections of grass that lift easily from the soil. Their lifecycle typically spans 1–3 years, with most of that time spent below ground as grubs.

Control:
Reduce outdoor lighting or switch to yellow “bug lights” to limit attraction at night. Keep doors and windows closed or properly screened to prevent indoor entry. Remove beetles indoors using a vacuum rather than crushing them. For long-term control, monitor lawns for signs of grub activity such as dead patches or loose turf. If damage is present, targeted lawn treatments in late summer or early fall are most effective. Maintaining healthy turf through proper watering and mowing can also reduce susceptibility. In cases of significant grub infestation, professional pest control services may be required.
