Centipedes

Size: 4 – 40 mm (can vary depending on species).

Color: Yellowish brown – Dark brown (some species may appear reddish).

Unique Characteristics: Centipedes are fast-moving arthropods with long, flattened bodies and one pair of legs per body segment. They prefer dark, damp environments and are commonly found in basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces, and under debris outdoors. Unlike millipedes, centipedes are predatory and feed on insects and other small pests. They use venomous front claws to capture prey and may bite if handled, though they generally avoid humans. Their quick movement and numerous legs can make them an alarming household nuisance.

Control: Reduce moisture levels by repairing leaks and improving ventilation. Remove clutter, debris, and hiding spots both indoors and around the foundation. Seal cracks and entry points around doors, windows, and utility openings. Since centipedes feed on other insects, controlling their food sources can help reduce activity. In severe cases, apply appropriate perimeter treatments or consult pest control professionals.
