Millipedes

Size: 10 – 50 mm (can vary depending on species).

Color: Dark brown – Black (some species may appear reddish or lighter brown).

Unique Characteristics: Millipedes are slow-moving arthropods with long, cylindrical bodies and two pairs of legs per body segment. They thrive in moist environments and are commonly found in soil, leaf litter, or damp basements. Unlike insects, they do not bite or sting. When disturbed, millipedes often curl into a tight spiral and may release a mild defensive secretion that can cause irritation on sensitive skin. They primarily feed on decaying organic matter, making them beneficial outdoors but a nuisance indoors.

Control: Reduce moisture levels by fixing leaks and improving ventilation. Remove organic debris such as leaves or mulch near the foundation. Seal cracks and entry points around doors and windows. In severe cases, apply appropriate perimeter treatments or consult pest control professionals.
